The Awakened Kingdom by N.K. Jemisin

4.0

A nice little novella that expands the scope of the core series. I like seeing the aftermath, and the way the culture of this world changes through yet another time jump. And it's honestly heartwarming to see the Three hanging out together again, even if conditions are less than perfect between them, and in the world in general.

I admire Jemisin for the way she deals with gender in the Darre culture. It's sort of a one-to-one switcharoo, where it's a matriarchy where the men are subservient, meant to obey and be pretty and make good matches for their family's honor. But it's not the exact same history as a patriarchal society would have, and there is more nuance there than you would think.

I listened to the audiobook for this one, and the reader had a very unique style that was pretty fun!
