This was a fascinating look at the how WWII unfolded long before the invasion of Poland.

It is centred around the story of Dora Fabian, a real life German socialist who was exiled to London before the war and tried desperately to get the world to see Hitler for who he was and prevent the war. Many of the names in the book are of real people, such as Ernst Toller, Mathilde Wurm and Fenner Brockway. Some of them were changed, though I'm not sure why.

Funder does a good job of bringing these people who existed so many years ago, to life and I admire the depth of her research. I found myself falling under Dora's spell just like Ruth and Ernst. However, the politics did get a bit dry at points for me.
