A Possibility of Violence by D.A. Mishani

3.0

I received this book through a Goodreads First Reads giveaway.

I enjoyed this book, but at times found myself struggling with the language and the back story. Being that this is the second book in a series, of which I have not read the first book, I felt it relied almost too heavily on the first novel. It was definitely more difficult to pick up this book and meet the characters without already knowing them. I feel that by the end I had a much clearer picture of the main character Avraham Avraham.

I found the language difficult, and I think it may have been primarily due to the the fact it was translated from Hebrew. Some of the sentence structures and ways in which dialogue was written had me reading the same few sentences multiple times in order to fully understand them. I don't think this is a weakness of the book, but I do think it takes a little getting used to, and if you have more experience with translated literature than I do, I am sure you will find it easy to read.

I thought the story was really well interwoven, and I was never really sure the direction the different parties were moving. I really liked the pairing of internal monologues between Avi, the detective, and Chaim, the potential suspect. It was so interesting to watch the brilliant detective be totally on the wrong path after reading from Chaim's point of view.

All in all, I thought it was an interesting read. I would probably have appreciated it more if I knew more about Israeli culture and Jewish traditions.
