The Masquerade by Brenda Joyce

NO RATING

I'm kind of pissed at myself for this one. I've held onto it for years, believing it to be a different book entirely. If young me (21 yr old) had ever read this I can not forgive myself for being OKAY with some of these shenanigans.

I like Masquerades. I like seemingly hopeless crushes. I like sisters who support each other. I like fateful encounters and sudden Sparks of "my god she is beautiful".

So imagine my gods damned surprise when Joyce has ALL OF THOSE THINGS in this book and they are a NIGHTMARE.

And this was all fine and good until page 81 when i realized something.

Readers, I read A LOT. Not a little, not casually, but A LOT. I also watch a lot of TV and movies. Do you know what I feared had happened when I read that paragraph near the bottom, when Anna says she feels unwell? "She slept with Lizzie's life long crush and is now pregnant."

Then I recoiled from such a thought because this is a ROMANCE. What woman in her right mind would do that to a sister she adores?

Well readers, Anna Fitzgerald would, did and was barely remorseful over it.

Then to have Lizzie decide to she's okay with being Tyrell's mistress while he marries someone else and Anna is married to the person she loves???

I WILL NOT STAND FOR THIS CHICANERY IN MY ROMANCES.
