One Day by David Nicholls

5.0

A sweet, funny story about real human relationships. It completely exceeded my expectations. It was one of those novels I wanted to live inside for a week or two while I was reading it, and now that I'm done I don't want to let it go. Beyond the plot and the characters and the narration, that's how I know it was a good book.

SpoilerI've always loved bittersweet endings, so Emma's death set this novel apart for me in a good way. I think Nicholls writes Dexter's reaction exceptionally well. As with the earlier parts of the novel, the emotions felt incredibly real. I found the ending devastatingly perfect.
