For the appreciator of both well-researched Medieval-set fantasy and of religious horror, the thought of reading this very much appealed to me, and I’m glad to say it didn’t disappoint. Buehlman’s writing is clear and focused yet contains some archaic qualities that make the story feel more of the era it is set in. It is also creatively gruesome and repellant with its grotesque depictions of violence and demonic presences, which is something that I feel is all too rarely as well-done as it is here. The scale is large, but not too large so as to become overwhelming, and manages to create a compelling dynamic between the three main characters and their arcane quest. The action is gripping, the religious aspects are well-formed, the atmosphere is unsettling… it’s great to see genres coming together like this, and to see them this well executed.
