Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier

5.0

How have I never read this book? It was so good full of great writing, lots of suspense, a great plot, very interesting characters, and lots of suspense and twists. From the very opening lines, I was hooked. While it was definitely a slow burn, the slowly developing story really created a haunting atmosphere of the beautiful Manderley House. You could feel the tension as Mrs. De Winter imagines all these thoughts and conversations happening around her about how much she doesn't measure up to Rebecca even as Rebecca's presence permeates throughout the house. Without revealing anything, there were at least 2 really terrible characters in this story, one of which made me shiver every time she spoke. The narrator, Anna Massey, did a great job with this voice and made the character come alive. Massey was somehow able to bring it home how evil this person was, and yet you ALMOST felt sorry for this person at the end during one of many reveals (yes, there were multiple revelations). Overall, she did a good job distinguishing the voices, although her male voices weren't nearly as distinct. Still, some of them really brought the character alive, and I honestly didn't want to stop listening every time I was interrupted. This book absolutely deserves all the accolades--it really is a perfect example of gothic romance. Highly recommended!
