I found this a real slog at times, I'm not going to lie. I think a lot of the issue was down to personal taste - this is a heavily plot-driven book, with explicit violence and torture, none of which I usually warm to. In the case of Nophek Gloss, however, I didn't click with the characters at all - particularly our protagonist Caiden. I found reading about him actively frustrating at some points, and his character development didn't ring true for me. I also despised Threi from the moment he first appeared onwards. I was much more invested in the background characters, who we sadly get to learn little about. As if so often the case with series I don't get on with, I found the epilogue more intriguing than a lot of the main plot - I will try to avoid being tempted to read the sequel, however.
2.5 stars, rounded up to 3.
