Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J.K. Rowling
5.0
From February 2023 until July 30th, 2024 I have enjoyed rediscovering the magic of this series with my daughter - a few pages at a time each night. We have spent so much quality time together falling in love with Hogwarts, comparing the books to the movies (and all the things they're missing), visiting the Wizarding World, searching thrift stores for her own paperback set and secondhand Hermione costume. While reading these we laughed, we cried, and my voice-acting abilities were pushed to their limit.
We also spent a lot of time talking about some of the problems within the series, AND the very real issues outside of it. In addition to the magic of the world, this year and a half has been an opportunity for me to have important conversations with her, creating a critical reader/thinker (and reminding her that trans rights are human rights), and I'm glad for that part of the experience as well.
Finishing on 7/30 was intentional, so that I could reflect on this experience today, on Harry's birthday. Harry - that wonderful boy. That brave, brave man. <3
