Children of Ragnarok by Cinda Williams Chima

4.0

A fantastic new YA fantasy series that I think would be great for any fans of the fantasy genre! Eiric and his sister Liv are in a situation where they need to protect their families farm after their mother dies and their Stepfather tries to kill them. Reginn accidentally brings back someone from the dead with her magic, and now people are after her. Eiric and Reginn's paths collide when Eiric challenges Reginn's slave master in a bar; after which they do not think they will ever meet again. Reginn escapes her master to an island led my wyrdspinners (magicians) and Eiric is hired to find that same island as a way to keep his families farm. As the story unfolds, we learn more about the magic in this world and the past war between the gods, which relates to both Reginn and Eiric, though they don't know it.

I really enjoyed this first novel in the series; I felt the worldbuilding was well done, although I was very confused about the gods having no knowledge of any norse mythology. Hopefully we will find out more about this in the next book. Even though this is tagged as YA, I don't necessarily think it needs to be. It could just be fantasy and I think any fantasy lover would enjoy this book.
