I read an ARC copy provided to me through goodreads giveaways.
What a fantastic book! The story centers around Dikembe who is taken from his family in Africa to live as a companion to a man in England. The book also follows Lowra who lives in the same house as Dikembe did, though decades later. The book quickly turns into a mystery as Lowra tries to learn the identity of the young boy she knows to have lived at the house. I love how even though we are reading Dekembe's story in his chapters, we don't yet know everything, so Lowra's search really keeps the readers invested.
There are many twists and turns in the story, most of them are heart wrenching and will probably make you cry, some of them are satisfying.
While we can learn about the atrocities of the colonization of Africa in history books, I think it's overlooked that we should also be reading historical fiction such as this to have a more emotional and visceral understanding of the events and people.
