The Collectors by Philip Pullman

2.0

I don't know what I expected from this short story, but it's certainly not what I got. I thought it was going to be about Mrs Coulter and I guess it was in a way, tangentially.

This story was not set in Lyra's world, although it doesn't actually specify which world it's in, it seems more like Will's world and is certainly one where they don't have deamons.

The story is about two pieces of artwork that always end up together, a painting of a woman and a statue of a monkey. I guess if taken by itself it could be seen as quite a good little piece to generate intrigue and mystery. But in the context of the wider His Dark Materials work I just found it quite random and unengaging.

I'm finding more and more that I'm just not enjoying Pullman's work as much as I'd like to, based on how much I love the original His Dark Materials trilogy.
