The author does not allow you to turn away from the violence and despair of these familiar stories. I was continually stunned by the flourish, speechless by the end. Highly recommend. Warning for (what I consider) graphic violence, particularly sexual violence. If you’ve read metamorphoses you know the stories, MacLaughlin simply expresses the viewpoint of the women (often victims) whose despair Ovid glossed over or ignored entirely. I found Myrrha to be highly disturbing and had trouble getting through this chapter, just a heads up.
Graphic: Child abuse, Sexual violence, Violence, Murder, and War
