Someone to Watch Over Me by Judith McNaught

3.0

When I first read this book I would have given it 5 stars. Less stars just shows how things change. There are some things I still just love. Give me a quiet, loyal, misunderstood, tall man filled with yearning? Oh honey that's my type. And it was when I first read this all those years ago. What's changed is I have a man like that of my own. The thought of being with someone else and missing out on 14 years with him?? I just can't. I also was uncomfortable with Leigh describing her marriage as so happy and then learning she'd caught him cheating before and they had a number of other issues. Yes she's grown by the end and could look back and see problems, but she was able to see the problems when she was in the relationship and acted like everything was wonderful. Also, I understand moving quickly when you know you've found the one, I did. But three months after you almost died and your husband went missing and was later found murdered, and you discover he was a cheater and extortionist...I think you might need to go to therapy for a while because you missed some majorly red flags. It's also a bit of a let down that her husband actually was dead because you never really got a showdown.

The other thing that bothered me was Sam and Mack's story. It was just unnecessary. I think now, everyone is a little more sensitive about the boss/subordinate relationship. Sam has been a detective for a month, this is her first big case, and she falls for the first 'hero detective' that comes along. He's much older, and they are also getting married within months of meeting. I don't know. Both relationships were cute in their own way, they just contained unhealthy elements.
