One Dark Window by Rachel Gillig

adventurous dark mysterious tense

5.0

Even after sitting with it for a week, I am still thinking about the characters and how the story ended. Personally, I really enjoy gothic fantasy books, especially when they have a dark forest vibe to them. So this book was right up my alley. Throw in a unique magic system? I’m hooked.

One of my favourite things, beyond the magic and mythology crafted so beautifully into the story, is the relationship between Elspeth
and the Nightmare.

Their interactions paint a picture of a strained relationship between two characters that can’t live without each other. Which is frustrating from the outside looking in. While it would probably be easier for Elsepth if she just stopped indulging the Nightmare and using his power, I don’t think she knows how to be alone and powerless.

The story and the romance was predictable in some parts, but it’s in the same way that if you consume a lot of fantasy content then most things can be predicted. I could see myself re-reading this book again for the magic system alone.
