The Knowledge of the Holy by A. W. Tozer

challenging inspiring reflective slow-paced

4.5

This book was stunning, as it should be for a book with the aim of re-kindling a sense of awe for the majesty of God.  It discusses several attributes of God - not his separate distinct characteristics, but words we can use to describe who God is as a perfect whole.  I LOVED all of the poetry the author includes, and it really did make me realize how watered down our religion has become.  We’ve decided we prefer catchy tunes with empty phrase over deep, powerful and emotional prose.  I thought that the discussion of the attributes would be easy to fly through - it’s such a small book! But I found that I could NOT read more than one chapter at a time.  Even though I’ve grown up in the church and heard God talked about all of my life, Tozer had so many things to say about each attribute that had never occurred to me before.  As opposed to making me feel like I know God better, it showed me how much depth I am missing, and has made me hunger for diving in and knowing him more. God is our friend, but so often do we forget that just because He is, doesn’t mean we shouldn’t fall down and worship His fearsome Glory.  It acknowledges that so much about God is and will forever be a secret to us, but that God has, in His Goodness, created a way for His Secrets to be known.
There was one chapter that I found myself disagreeing with, and it was focused on how our passion for science has torn us away from wonder and faith. I think that with the wrong intentions that could be very true, but I also believe that God created a complex world and gave us complex minds that long to understand the insanity and miracle of creation.
