The Ballad of the Sad Café by Carson McCullers

3.0

It's been a while since I read it and I'm only reviewing it now. If I can say something I truly loved about the tale it's the atmosphere McCullers manages to capture and the simplicity of both the environment and the storytelling. I wish I could love it honestly.

But the characters struck me off as inconsistent and weird. Their actions are so idiotic, especially towards the end, that I struggled to find them believable or relatable. Had they been toned down, I would have liked them more. But then again, maybe that was the point and I missed it.

I found it enjoyable but not really *good*. The author seems great though, so maybe it's just an issue of the story itself and her other books are better.
