A Peculiar Peril by Jeff VanderMeer

challenging dark mysterious slow-paced
  • Loveable characters? No
  • Diverse cast of characters? It's complicated

2.5

Ok I made it to 75% and I’m calling it. 750 pages and I’m still not loving this book. I really wanted to live the world building and characters but there is just too much going on in this bizarre story to connect to anything.
Jonathan is a teen who inherits his grandfather’s estate with one caveat, he’s got to catalogue everything in it. Jonathan ropes two friends in and the three discover magical doors that open to other versions of Earth. Together the three, along with new friends they meet on the way, try to thwart the plans of a body-less Alistair Crowley.
I loved the Area X series by this author and was super excited to find a YA book by him. Just too tired to keep slogging through this one. Too long, too twisty, too bizarre.
