Fangirls: Scenes from Modern Music Culture, by Hannah Ewens

emotional funny hopeful informative inspiring lighthearted reflective slow-paced

4.0

An enjoyable read for any music fan or pop culture vulture, this made me nostalgic for my teen years. From My Chemical Romance and mental illness, to One Direction and female desire. From Beyonce's Beyhive to Courtney Love and older fandoms, 'Fangirls' takes a delicious dive into many modern music phenomena.
I'd have liked to see Hannah Ewans speak more about fandom theory and the ridicule fangirls have historically received despite being incremental to an artist's career. These topics are touched on but not explored in as meaty way as I'd hoped.
A great read for any fan of current music even if your favourite isn't mentioned (hello The 1975!) - the love for music and sheer joy discussed is transferable whatever your taste or genre. This book could be enjoyed by everyone but, of course, especially women and those born in the late 80s/early 90s onwards.
