A Catalog of Birds by Laura Harrington

5.0

I knew from a few pages in that this novel would be a gut-wrenching, tear-your-heart-out read for me (I was right). Nell's coming of age journey is beautifully written and the characterizations were poignant and authentic. Harrington exquisitely captures the many losses experienced by veterans and their families on so many levels- through the literal loss of Megan, the loss of physical ability, the loss of "normalcy," the strange and perplexing grief that settles on a family when they sense they have lost someone who is still living. Startlingly relevant for present times.
