Pulse Points: Stories by Jennifer Down
5.0
Wow. Just ... wow.
I’ve struggled to find an Australian author I could get on board with and Jennifer Down just blew all my negativity out of the water. This collection is as close to perfect as any I’ve read!
Down dives straight into the heart of her narrators, doing that pinch perfect thing short stories are supposed to do - tell everything and nothing in as few words as possible. Her stories feel like buried memories, dug up and put on display once more. Slightly fractured and very raw.
I loved that Down didn’t keep these Aussie-centric. The global dispersement of her characters and their settings, I feel, really helped to make this an exceptionally strong collection.
Demonstrating a deep unyielding understanding of the human psyche and heart, I can’t recommend this enough.
