OMG where has this book been hiding? It's like Mulan meets Eragon meets Fourth Wing, only better. And considering I love all three of those, that's saying a lot. This is the best debut novel I've read in years, possibly ever. You really come to care for the characters and their struggles. Between the attachment to the characters and the great world building, I easily pictured myself there while reading and haven't been able to leave the story behind since finishing.
One of the descriptions for this book mentioned a slow burn and that is 100% accurate. I'm normally screaming for main characters to finally get together - it annoys me when they're just dragging an obvious attraction on for no good reason - but this book was different. Without getting spoilery, they both had to learn to trust each other and get past their initial impressions of the other (à la Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennett in Pride and Prejudice). And so far this series has developed this relationship beautifully. Can't wait to see where it goes from here.
After reading this book, I feel like I need to downgrade all of my recent reviews to make room at the top for this one. If I had 6 stars to give it, I would. I hope that someday this will be trad published, not only because the author deserves it and more people should be able to experience this story, but because I selfishly want it adapted into movie form. Until that point comes, I definitely see myself re-reading this series over and over again in order to revisit the world and characters that Frick developed. Bravo.

The SA is not completed, just attempted. The FMC is rescued before anything happens and justice is handed out to her attackers.
