Reading this book reminded me of waking up on a Saturday morning to watch Naruto as a kid. Like Naruto is not considered a cinematic masterpiece, this book is not a literary masterpiece. On the contrary, the translation often left something to be desired, as others have mentioned. However, the story has a certain quality that I found addictive, much like Naruto.
In Naruto and many other popular anime / manga, the protagonist has to become strong. They often start off as less than even the weakest characters. Overlord is the exact opposite. Momonga begins as a metaphorical God, able to obliterate anything he sets his sights on. This often leads to feelings of alienation and anxiety, which are slightly touched on in this book.
By itself, I would not give this book 5 stars. The sexual comments towards minors is disturbing for an English translation, the translation itself often has weird wording or phrasing, and the story of the first novel does not really have much depth to it. That being said, it sets the stage for a much grander story that comes in later novels. In the context of those later novels, I give it 5 stars.
