A Thousand Beginnings and Endings by Elsie Chapman, Ellen Oh

3.0

A Thousand Beginnings and Endings is an own voices YA anthology of Asian myth retellings and reimaginings. I would say that while there were a few stories in here that stuck out to me, the majority were quite bland. There’s a lot thrown in here, ranging from androids to vampires to aliens, which actually put me off from a lot of the stories and also made the collection feel less cohesive. My favorites in here were the more “traditional-with-a-twist” retellings: The Forbidden Fruit, The Smile, The Crimson Cloak, and Eyes Like Candlelight. Each story also included an “authors note” at the end about the original myth/tale and what inspired them to write their version. If you enjoy YA and would like to read some Asian myths and tales, try dipping into some of these stories 👍.
