what I loved most about this collection was its complete timelessness. this book could have been published ten years ago, but in fact the stories in were published between the 50s-70s, and the author died in 1995. that's how immediate the language is, how fresh the ideas are, how instantly recognizable the characters are outside of any time or even place.
some stories were more challenging than others, but this whole collection knocked my socks off. I found it in a "books that mattered to me most" article about black booksellers, and am so glad to have tracked it down.
