Brian's Winter by Gary Paulsen

3.0

I read this book today in memory of Gary Paulsen who died yesterday, October 13th, 2021. This book really didn't do what the previous two did. In the introduction, Paulsen says that this book is a "what-if." What if Brian hadn't been rescued by the man in the plane at the end of Hatchet and had to survive the winter? A cool concept, I guess. A cool exercise, but because of that context, the book felt less urgent and engaging. The details were cool, but I wasn't as invested in the story as I was with Hatchet and The River.
