Becoming Calder, by Mia Sheridan

5.0

Becoming Calder is a sweet yet painful story about self-discovery and growing up. With two main characters who are down-to-earth, patient and kind towards one another, this was a fresh and much needed detachment from the clichéd love-hate relationships. The maturity these two have is not often something I find in protagonists and it only made me appreciate them more as people.

While this is a romance novel, I felt like the story - although centered on the protagonists’ love - shines with such wonderful qualities from both lovers. Resilience, commitment and devotion to one another. It must be hard to discover oneself, especially when your newfound self seems to go against everything you were taught. It must be especially harder to discover yourself while faced with such an impossible situation where someone else’s life depends on your actions. So much could go wrong, it is frightening. But Calder and Eden never backed down. This sweet innocence of theirs never wavers in spite of the many hardships along the way and it makes them braver, their unwavering faith in a better future.

I am a wreck. This book was an emotional rollercoaster in so many ways. I’m still coming down from the high yet still feeling the despair and anguish. I felt every part of this book through my soul, through my bones all the way to my damn marrow. It wrecked me in such an expected and insidious way. I’m still trying to wrap my head around it. I can only imagine what the next one will do. There is a soulfulness to this story that I wasn’t expecting at all. And for that, it’s a five-star for me.
