A Country Doctor's Notebook by Mikhail Bulgakov

4.0

Published over the course of two years in the 1920s in two monthly magazines aimed at a different target audience and collated in a single volume after his death, as his translator lets us know, some details can feel a little repetitive at times as a result.

However, each medical case reads like a thriller (not for the faint-hearted though). While very engaging and well written, the book also brings to light the devastating effects of poverty, ignorance, and depression with hints of dark humour and howling blizzard aplenty à la Wuthering Heights.

I am now eager to discover how the BBC adapted it!
