The Parent Trap by Erich Kästner

4.0

A great, very enjoyable read. The story alternates between Lottie's experience with her father and Luise's experience with her mother, as they both have the newfound experience of getting to know the parent they each had never known. This one is a bit more interesting than the Disney adaptation in the sense that their ultimate aim is not actually to try and get their parents back together (which is what eventually ends up happening), but to meet the parent they each never knew!

I found this a very short and quick, yet engaging read. It was able to give us the insight of two girls who had lived most of their lives so far with only one parent, and without knowing they had a sibling, let alone a twin!

This book also teaches us and shows us the very important value of family, especially by the end of the novel. I loved the way the father got rid of the ''stepmother-to-be'' (Irene Gerlach) by a very quick-witted quote in the book (read the book to find out!). It showed devotion to his family and that he was actually glad to have his family back. We can see this as his family comes back together, he starts to change, and for the better.

One of my favourite parts to explore and engage in within the story were the girls' teachers finding out indirectly that their students are not who they used to be and suspect something peculiar, especially Lottie's teacher. I also liked Irene Gerlach's ''wicked-stepmother'' development, even up to the point where Ludwig breaks it to her that he is not interested anymore.

A well deserved 4stars - only reason I cut one off is because I prefer the Disney adaptation a bit more!
