On reflection the fact the book was given to me as a gift and it was sent with the intention of "cheering me up" was hilarious to me because I don't think the gift giver had any idea of what lay within.

I was expecting a dark but humorous look at death and some nice chat about cake.

Well, it turns out the author has a less than excellent track record with cake and has experienced a lot of loss by a young age.

This book had me laughing and crying at different points, as well as feeling a lot of anger on the author's behalf especially surrounding cake, diet culture, and unkind family.

It's a memoir but the way cake weaves through the years of her life makes it an infinitely more interesting book to read than biographies I've read before.
You're immediately thrown into her life and follow the cake rather than "I was born, then this happened, then this happened".

Would definitley recommend if you're in need of a book that allows you to feel, the author is so good at describing deep depressions that you feel you're in them with her and can cry and laugh along with her.
Overall I found it comforting and there are some amazingly insightful thoughts about death and grief. It made me want to give the author a hug and bake her a happy cake.
