The Near Witch by V.E. Schwab

3.0

I adore VE Schwab’s later books but this one definitely has a different feel - you can feel that it’s her debut novel compared to her later work.

This reads more like a dark fairytale than a fantasy novel, as the scale is much smaller and the magic mode folksy.

I enjoyed the story and the setting but I didn’t connect with Lexi, the main character, at all - she’s suffering tragically with Not Like The Other Girls syndrome and I couldn’t see past it.

Worth a read, especially if you’re a Schwab fan, but definitely not her best storytelling.
