No Longer Human by Osamu Dazai

2.0

If this was fully fiction, and written in today’s world, I probably would’ve liked it even less.
I disliked how our narrator never really described any character, which led me to not being able to connect with anyone, or remember their role in his life.
And can we talk about the overwhelming misogyny?? Almost every time this man encountered a woman I wanted to stop reading it.
Despite that, the one liners and monologues sent me spiraling into my own deep darkness- that’s really what kept me reading on. I really appreciated the honest discussion of a genuine lack of interests. The reality of mundane life intertwined with multiple “I want to kill myself”’s was darkly humorous and relatable.
Overall, I liked the book, with some resentment now and then. I’d be interested to read some other works of Dazai to see if the woman-hater-trope was just our character, or part of the autobiographical honesty.
