I don't think this was the book for me; I didn't care one iota for these characters in previous books, and I still don't care for them after a whole book spent in their heads. Both Tiel and Sam handle their respective family relationships and other important aspects of their lives exceptionally poorly and in ways I don't find remotely sympathetic, and I found it hard to respect their choices and the way they often treated each other throughout the course of the book.
I think this book was very well written and I expect many other readers will find a lot to love here (everything I had a problem with was quite possibly just a 'me' problem), but Sam and Tiel were simply not characters with whom I enjoyed spending my time.
