Whispers in the Mist is the third book in what has become one of my favorite series by Darcy Coates, and it completely lived up to my expectations. The story continues to follow Clare and Dorran as they fight for survival in a world overrun by the hallows that seem to be endless and everywhere. It picks up right from where the second book left off. While they’ve managed to stay alive somehow, Dorran’s health is rapidly declining, adding an intense layer of urgency to their journey. They encounter and overcome problems and obstacles everywhere they go which adds to the exciting nature of this book.

If you read the previous two books, you now know that they must make it to the Evandale Research Station, which is the only place for safety and the place they need to deliver their item. But, they don’t even know if it is still there or if anyone is still alive. There is tension at every turn and it was so hard to put this book down. As Clare struggles to protect those she cares about, she’s forced to face the harsh reality that not everyone can be saved, and sometimes the worst monsters wear a human smile. For those that are fans of romance, this continues the love story between Clare and Dorran and that added touch makes it so much better.

This book kept me on the edge of my seat, and the emotional depth of the characters made the stakes feel incredibly real. If you’re a fan of horror, suspense, and stories that explore the darker side of human nature, this series is a must-read. So far, all three out of the four books have been a 5 star for me and I can’t wait to start the last book!
