Well...that escalated quickly. This book is violent and bloody, but it doesn't ever feel gratuitous or over the top. Duncan & Maddie make some TERRIBLE life choices, though, and I kind of want to shake them both.
SpoilerI'm also not sure why they didn't try to escape together each time one of them escaped at the end. It felt weird to me that Maddie escapes and Duncan stays and then HE escapes and she stays.

I also really appreciated the author note at the end about how they were very intentional about making sure that all the violence and poor decisions had consequences for the teens.

Overall, I thought this was a well written, beautifully drawn book that does a good job introducing these characters and the world they live in. I want to know where Maddie goes from here!
