The Weight of the Stars by K. Ancrum

Ok so I’m writing this around 10% in so early for opinions, but I’m not a fan. The writing itself is very ‘he did this, she did that’, a lack of description and any kind of in-depth detail. The plot itself is one that’s not very enticing, with none of the characters interesting other than Alexandria. The main character, Ryann, seems very flawless, an orphaned girl who looks after her family and brings isolated people into her friendship group and ‘saves’ them. It’s too perfect. The way she brings people towards her is through some kind of aggression, which just feels wrong. She’s also strangely violent, which again feels wrong because it just doesn’t fit. She’s comfortable talking to anyone. She even talked to essentially a stranger’s father, whose daughter she’s pretty much just landed in hospital, and has sworn, used slightly rude tones and has asked invasive, personal questions. It’s just not realistic. They’ve established her orphanage because it will likely come into play as Alexandria lost her mum, using a tragedy to bring them closer together which if not written well will just feel like a cliche. I don’t know, so far I’m just not feeling it, the plot isn’t for me. Like it’s all a bit random, there’s no goal. She’s caught some kind of guitar song from the radio, which of course had to happen when she was the one trying to catch it, and not Alexandria who’d been trying for years, and now they’re off to the beach. It doesn’t feel like there is a storyline, I feel like this’d work better in a visual format because in a book format it feels really clunky. I’m now writing this a bit further into the book, and again, there’s not much development with the characters, and Ryann is unrealistic. She’s about to do illegal things to help Alexandria, but it doesn’t feel like they have a solid enough relationship to do that, it’s more just Ryann playing the hero again. I’m writing this now that I’ve finished it, and yeah not a fan. She just left to go to space, leaving everyone even James and Charlie, and now Alexandria is coming yet she said she couldn’t leave her dad? No consistent characters, and an uninteresting plot
