An Enchantment of Ravens by Margaret Rogerson

5.0

I love Margaret Rogerson. Her descriptive writing makes me smile, cry, laugh, and just generally appreciate its wonderfulness. Her books are fast-paced, creative and unpredictable.

Rogerson has her own little very specific trope used in both this and Sorcery of Thorns and I’m living for it. It’s a forbidden romance between the human girl who works around this ancient magic that she’s scared of but also doesn’t really know all that much about and the handsome young man who’s considered incredibly powerful in the practice of said ancient magic, who ends up incredibly protective of her (though somewhat begrudgingly). The two of them go up against a more powerful wielder of previously mentioned magic, and the human girl ends up being considerably more powerful than she thought. All the while we have sexual tension, beautiful dresses and a lot of imagery.

I cannot express how much I love it.

I have one single complaint. Just one.

THIS IS A STANDALONE.

That fact honestly makes me want to cry. I know the story is finished but I’m 100% serious when I say I would happily just read a book of them ruling the world together and being in love. I want a domestic short story collection. She cannot make me love a world, and make me have so many damn questions about the world and just leave it there. Do the fae have emotions or don’t they? Is Gadfly an arsehole or a good person? Is Lark childish or manipulative? Is Isobel immortal now, too? I have so many questions!!!

So, overall I love it, and you should read it if you want a quick, funny, romantic, satisfying read. But if you get as emotionally invested as I do in characters, remember that this is not a series, so restrain yourself!
