Touch the Dark by Karen Chance

2.0

As far as paranormal fantasy series' go, I wasn't impressed with "Touch the Dark". Though this is the typical human-girl-with-extraordinary-magical-abilities-fighting-for-her-life story, the way in which Karen Chance approaches the novel really irritated me as a reader. From the very first page, the lead female protagonist, Cassandra, begins running for her life and as a reader we're left scratching our heads as to why until her backstory unfolds IN THE MIDDLE OF non-stop action sequences. While the action parts are fine, the unceasing plot interruption to explain the world and Cassandra's past not only slow the story but leave readers a bit disoriented about what exactly is going on with the present situation. This is the second time I've read this book (I thought I'd reserve judgment after the first read so I could try and better absorb the story and see if my initial impression changed), and I still do not find this book any more enjoyable than the first read. There is absolutely nothing original in the storyline or world-building that you can't find in any of the other hundreds of paranormal series' on the market. This story simply does not stand out. Cassandra Palmer is a clairvoyant who, after her parents were killed in an automobile accident when she was seven-years-old, grows up in the household of a powerful vampire, Tony. When she turns fourteen-years-old, Cassandra receives a vision that helps her realize Tony had arranged the car accident and was using her visions for his personal gain. So, she runs away and plots to have the FBI arrest Tony on murder charges. Unfortunately, Tony was not present when the sting operation went down and now, pissed, he hunts her. After living on the streets for many years, Cassandra eventually starts managing a semi-normal life, that is, until she receives a death threat on her computer and is plunged back into the world she's trying to escape. I think I'll give this series one more chance by reading the sequel, but my expectations are low. I hate not liking a book.
