Dealing with Dragons by Patricia C. Wrede
Delightful. Given the original 90s publication date, I'm particularly pleased with how female forward this story was. It might seem like feminism 101 that the princess wants more out of life than comportment and being married off, that a female dragon can be the King of Dragons, that Morwen the witch, and cat lady,☺️ is a formidable ally, but as this feels like it was written for middle grade readers, I don't begrudge it for simple, clear messaging. On the Terry Pratchett/Tiffany Aching-esque side of things I was chortling at how harmlessly befuddled and bumbling the knights and princes were, how easily, if temporarily, vanquished the wizards were. The reptilian demotion of Woraug was perfect. Does Cimorene have the potential to be a little 'not like other girls', or at least, 'not like other princesses' ? Yes, which makes me appreciate her friendship with Alianora all the more, who is happy to find her prince and is not condemned for wishing for that ending. Always a joy to find a book from an earlier time I'd say still holds up...just not enough for me to be interested in continuing the series. My Tumblr post-based curiosity been been fully satisfied. 💁🏼♂️ ⚠️Animal death
