I'm Glad My Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy

emotional sad medium-paced

4.0

this is one of the best memoirs i’ve ever read. the use of the present tense narration really brings you into little Jennette’s head and helps you understand her perspective as things happened. i really admire McCurdy for having written this powerful work, especially after having read about her relationship with the spotlight. i’m hesitant to use words like “brave” and “inspirational” because of their connotations, but this is a very important literary work which not only reflects on McCurdy’s life, but also reflects how our attitudes towards those in the spotlight HAVE to change. somehow more impressively, she has the guts to call us out on our glorification of the dead, and the importance of seeing things as they are, not as how we want them to be. obviously a super heavy memoir, but everything is handled with the utmost grace and dry humour that really expresses her own voice
