Portable Magic: A History of Books and their Readers by Emma Smith

it's a shame - i really liked this book, but the author is a thinly-disguised transphobe. not only does the chapter about book burning never mentioned that the books the nazis burned included the entire archives of the Institut für Sexualwissenschaft, irreplaceable documents about the history and research of transgender people in germany, but in the same chapter comes this quote:

"At least two waves of burning have targeted J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter novels in the twenty-first century ... the second was a social media phenomenon sharing images of charred pages in protest at views expressed by the author that have been labelled transphobic. One tweet in response smartly activated Godwin's Law: '1930s Nazis called. They want their book-burning policy back.'"

acting like people shaming jkr for being a terf is the same thing as nazis destroying transgender history is an evil and deliberately misleading thing to do
