Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup by John Carreyrou

informative tense medium-paced

4.5

This book was an absolute page turner! The things Elizabeth Holmes and Theranos got away with, especially for as long as they did, are absurd! I knew a fair bit about this scandal beforehand, but Carreyrou does an exceptional job detailing some of the more intricate day to day operations of the company. The writing was exceptional and clearly explained some of the more detailed scientific concepts. The manipulative tactics employed by Holmes, although extremely creepy, were nothing short of genius. I feel for everyone who was affected by this scandal; physicians, former employees who were treated miserably and threatened relentlessly, and most importantly any patients who received erroneous blood test results that either missed conditions or caused unnecessary psychological stress. Although this was an extreme case, I personally hope that technology companies start being held to a higher standard of ethics.
