The Book of Pearl by Timothée de Fombelle

3.0

I have to admit, this book was not at all what I thought it would be. Not that that is a bad thing, I just expected something different. The story was interesting and the narrative moved things along at a nice consistent pace. I did find the switch between each of the characters points of view confusing at times, especially between Pearl and the narrator. The story itself is told from three different points of view. This confusion in knowing who was telling what also blurred the time element of the book for me as well, leaving me wondering where in time we were as it wasn't always clear who was telling which part of the story. The interweaving of a fantasy world along-side the real world was written quite well, though it would be nice to see books pick other points in history other than the second world war. Even though this book ended up being something totally different then I thought it was going to be, it was a good read all the same.
