This book has an interesting premise, but barely works within this premise. It outlines the rules, but becomes a story more about magic feuds and inherited subtle superpowers than "the eighth day". The prose is simple, and works.
In the end, it just becomes a "stop the ritual", where the protagonist sort of just goes with the flow, and every other character is engaged in more interesting stories.
