The Mischief of the Mistletoe by Lauren Willig

4.0

What a delightful holiday read. This story is like if Jane Austen meets The Scarlet Pimpernel only he’s stuck in his bumbling Perceval Blakeney persona and they have to solve a mystery together while also falling in love, all set against an opulent holiday backdrop. The dialogue is equal parts witty and ridiculous, and is definitely the best part of the book. The outcome of the mystery was fairly underwhelming (I couldn’t even remember one of the villains when they were revealed) but since this was mostly a cheeky, self-aware historical romance it didn’t really bother me. Apparently the hero of this book is a side character from the main series, but I haven’t read any of those books (and likely won’t) so I think this does just fine as a stand alone.
