Jade Fire Gold by June CL Tan

Jade Fire Gold had me at “fantasy based in Chinese folklore and culture.” Yes please! Add in the dual perspectives and characters I thoroughly enjoyed and I was ready for wherever the book would take me!

The story switches between Ahn, a peasant girl with secret forbidden magic, and Altman, an exiled prince whose father was killed in a play for the throne.

I enjoyed the world building in the book. I’m sure listening to it as an audiobook helped but often the names of fantasy territories can easily pull me out of the story and scramble my brain.

The plot twists were nicely timed and I really would have followed these characters for 300 more pages! And for at least one more book!

I’m amazed and pleasantly surprised it’s a standalone but it takes a strong author to wrap up a fantasy story in one book. The story also didn’t end with every bow tied which is a huge plus in my book!
