The Fastest Way To Fall by Denise Williams

5.0

This was excellent.

I'm pretty cautious about books that deal with fitness, but even before the book started, I felt safe in Denise's world because of her author note. Britta is a budding journalist who is assigned to cover a fitness app, which means actively taking part in training sessions with another human. Her goal: she wants to feel comfortable naked in her body. As soon as she meets her trainer through the app, there is instant playfulness. The sense of mystery is sexy. And Wes is a great teacher who becomes a good friend. Meanwhile, he has no idea she's writing about his business and she doesn't realize he's actually the co-owner of the business she is writing back. It's a little bit of You've Got Mail as they exchange messages move to text and then... because of a slew of circumstances meet in person.

Britta is ambitious and spunky and vulnerable and as a reader, you are rooting for her from page 1. She's a proud fat woman who doesn't want to focus on weight loss but feeling strong and feeling good for herself. She's insecure about relationships because of some past situations. With Wes, she feels taken care of and accepted for who she is. She never feels less than...

Wes is at a bit of a professional crossroads and he's also someone who has been left a lot in his life. When he meets Britta, he falls in love with teaching again and he also finds someone who he wants to talk to/get to know beyond the trainer-trainee relationship. It's complicated. And it's even more complicated beyond that. When I think of a trainer, I hope they would be like Wes -- simple and safe ways to work with a client. He doesn't harp on weight loss or force his clients into dangerous situations. I just loved how he wanted to cheer Britta on, and how her successes made him only want to experience more of that with her -- in all aspects of life.

This romance is just so good. THE WAY THEY TEASE EACH OTHER. It's slow-burn but the chemistry is VERY good and the build-up to the two meeting in person was paced so well. There's a lot for each of them to uncover about the other - and then some power dynamics - but Denise handled each roadblock with thoughtfulness and maturity and real consequences -- leading to one of the best HEAs I've read in awhile. In fact, this book will certainly be in my top romances of 2021 list.

Content warnings: fitness, discussion of weight loss, side character is an addict.

Setting: Chicago.
