Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan

I was hoping to love this as much as I loved the movie, but I have to say, I think the movie did a better job creating a cohesive story that also introduced people to this world better.

This author is very big on "telling" instead of showing. He's constantly dropping designer names that I didn't really understand and after a while it got cumbersome to just be laden with description after description.

I also felt like there were so many characters that didn't necessarily serve any of the plot. We got a moment with Colin's sister Sophie (whose story line at the bachelorette party was given to Astrid in the movie which I feel was smart since it gives us a better connection to Astrid), a glimpse at Araminta's mother, and Jaqueline Li. However, these snippets didn't really do anything for the plot overall. Even Peik Lin and Wei Mun's side plot don't really do anything. Actually at one point, it seems like they're plotting to steal Nick from Rachel.

The pacing of the entire book seemed off as well. It's obviously the start of a series, but I feel the first book in a series should be able to stand on its own while encouraging the reader to come back for the next one. The way that the last portion of the book was explaining the huge twist of Kerry's backstory but left everything with Nick's family open ended made me feel disappointed.

One of the few cases where I really enjoyed the movie over the book.
