Beloved by Toni Morrison

dark mysterious reflective sad slow-paced

4.0

I put off reading this for so long. I think that Morrison was brilliant in her writing and Beloved speaks to so much intergenerational trauma, grief, maternal sacrifice, and dehumanization of enslaved peoples. I can see why this book is considered a classic and is taught in schools (that haven’t banned it, lol).

I wouldn’t say this novel is my ~favorite~ of hers. I preferred the bluest eye more. I think some of the chapters in this book were significantly more dense than others, and they threw me a little bit. I wish Denver’s chapters had a bit more to them, and I had hoped for a few more chapters exploring Sethe’s perspective of Beloved “eating her alive.” But I also guess that Morrison left a lot up to the reader’s interpretation, so I guess that’s the core beauty of this book?
