He Who Fights With Monsters 8 by Travis Deverell

4.0

This is my favorite LitRPG series, in spite of whatever faults it may have. Jason's journey from waking up naked and hairless in a new world to being a super confident annoying yet hilarious silver-rank adventurer has been engaging and fun. Mostly. This particular installment is more technical and explanatory than I was hoping for, yet chock-full of information. I think it is setting us up for the remaining arc of the series, but the actual charm of the story suffered a little bit. Also, there was MUCH repetition. I hope that isn't a new bad habit because one of my pet peeves is reading a story, then having to endure an entire chapter that is just a summary of everything I just read. To a degree, I understand summarizing what has happened in a different character's point of view - in maybe one or two sentences - especially if I didn't completely understand the overall concept. But an entire chapter that re-explains the explaining book is tedious. This has a few of those. Still, this book still has the banter I love between the adventure party (Belinda really stood out to me in this one) and Jason is very Jason and I love that. I do nerd out on the stats sometimes, so liked that too. If I think about it as its own book, I didn't love it. If I think about it as a book in the series, it helped and I am looking forward to the next one. I just hope that the repetition issue goes away, there is less explaining a technical thing by a long boring conversation, and there are more colorful fun adventures with great dynamics between the characters that we know and love. Still giving it four stars because thank you for not making me wait a year for each book.
